Referring to my images of rust in the sketchbook I have realised dripping rust, was something I hadn’t as yet attempted to express. Initially I used latex. Then as this was unsuccessful I exchanged it for emulsion. I wanted to combine textures between the knitting machine and the emulsion paint taking Masion Martin Margiela as my inspiration. Consequently using thick layered emulsion which cracked owing to the thickness applied I achieved the appearance desired. I want to further my experiments with this media by hopefully applying it more in a delicate way.
With the plaster I hoped to be able to add it direct into my knits, I attempted to sew pieces on to a knitted piece, I found that the sample was really heavy and clunky looking and not what I wanted, Something that I do not wish to replicate again.
However I have been using individual pockets but I found working with monofilament with this technique was too harsh and the product was not as delicate as anticipated. Therefore so I doubled up a polyester thread and used this on a fine gauge dubied and prefer by far the effect it gives as it gives the sample more fragility which portrays more directly the nature of rust.
Likewise I discovered looking through my sketchbook I have used a lot of metallic colours. Now I want to find another way to bring this to my samples, other than just foiling, experimenting with spray paint, metallic dye paint, plating viscose and inlaying to see which gives the better effect.
